Stay at one of the great surf hotels in Costa Rica.
Why stay in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is an amazing place to stay. There is a wide range of hotels in Costa Rica. So there really is a place for everyone. Choosing the right one for your surf trip can be the difference between good and great surf trip!
Hotels in Costa Rica
Part of the beauty of Costa Rica is that it is still fairly undeveloped. Most of the hotels in Costa Rica are smaller. There are some huge condo-type hotels around San José, but most of the coastline has not been polluted by massive buildings.
Hotels in Costa Rica can be broken up into six different types:
Surf Hotels
Hotels
Resorts
Hostels
Inland Hotels
House Rentals
These six different accommodations should be able to fit into any surfer’s travel plans.
Surf Hotels
A large portion of tourists are surfers. Therefore, hotels in Costa Rica are generally friendly towards surfers. Surf hotels are hotels that are close to surf spots. Some of them even have surfboard rentals in or around the hotel.
Hotels
Hotels in Costa Rica are near the coast but not right on the water. These hotels can be cheaper than the surf hotels because they are not right on the beach. If you plan on renting a car and staying off the beaten path, you can save some money by staying at a general hotel instead of a surf hotel in Costa Rica.
Resorts
Resorts in Costa Rica are not the normal massive complexes you see in the United States. Most resorts try to keep with the natural feeling of Costa Rican culture. Resorts are usually more expensive than hotels in Costa Rica.
They offer things within the resort like:
Pools
Surf lessons
Restaurants
Spas
Snorkeling
Horse Back Riding
Windsurfing
Some resorts even schedule surfing trips
Hostels
A budgeting surfer’s dream. Hostels are a great way to visit Costa Rica on a budget. Hostels are scattered throughout the country. You usually will not find many right on the beach as oceanfront real estate is too expensive. You might have to share a room or bathroom if you stay at a Costa Rica hostel, but if you are paying next to nothing for the night, do you really care? As long as you have a place to sleep after a long day of Costa Rica surfing.
Inland Hotels
Another option are hotels in Costa Rica that are located at the center of the country. If you want to surf both coasts, these can offer a nice break in traveling.
There are also some retreat-like hotels inland. They offer different spiritual retreats. If the surf takes a day off and you want to reconnect with yourself, take to the hills and meditate.
House Rentals
Costa Rica doesn’t have a large vacation rental market. The rentals that are around tend to be larger houses. If you are traveling with a group of people, splitting the rent on a Costa Rica beach house can be a great way for a surf group to stay near the beach.
Hotels in Costa Rica range from top of the line 5 star hotels to hostels where you might have to share a room with someone. With the wide variety of hotels in Costa Rica, there is something for everyone.
